We all know that Frankenstein's monster has a square head, green skin and a bolt through the neck. But where did that image come from?

Frankenstein. Never was a name more unfairly associated with a shambling re-animated corpse.

Frankenstein's Monster

If only Mary Shelley had given the monster a name then we would have been spared the horrible linguistic circumlocution we’re forced into just to refer to him, pedants would have a smug cause for complaint removed and overall the world would be a happier place.
Still, the nomenclature of the monster isn’t what I want to talk about today, but how did he become the square faced, green skinned, bolt necked monstrosity that we’ve all come to know and love?

The construction of Mary Shelley’s original monster is left to the imagination. The materials used unspecified, save a mention of the ‘dissecting room and the slaughter-house’ and he is large only because ‘the minuteness of the parts formed a great hindrance to my speed. There is no mention of the now standard elements of the tale; lightning storms, graveyard robbery, brain implants (from Mr Abi Normal) and certainly no neck bolts. Shelley’s monster is also perfectly capable of speech, far from the grunting in-erudite beast we have come to expect and gives long speeches in an attempt to win over his creator.

So, moving on from the novel, we turn to Hollywood. The first film production of Frankenstein was as early as 1910. Edison Studios produced a 12 minute film starring Charles Ogle as the monster. Ogle also apparently designed his own make-up, but his efforts bare little resemblance to what we would expect today.

For the modern look, we have to head forward to 1931 and the classic Universal studios adaptation. Boris Karloff starred, but credit for creating the classic monster look goes largely to the king of monster make-up, Jack Pierce. HIs monster has all the classic features: square head, brain insertion scar on the forehead and, most importantly, the bolts through the neck (actually electrodes used to conduct the electricity used to bring the monster to life). It is Jack Pierce who puts the pieces together to give us the monster’s iconic look.

Not content with creating one of the most enduring Halloween monster masks, Jack Pierce also gave us The Mummy, the first time we saw Imhotep, 67 years before the one who kidnapped Rachel Weisz and Universal’s 1941 Wolf Man, sticking yak hair onto Lou Chaney’s face to give us another Halloween classic.

Jack’s films were in black and white of course, so we can’t hang Frankenstein’s colour onto him. The first Frankenstein film to be made in colour was Hammer’s 1957 classic, The Curse of Frankenstein but the first time he seems to pick up a greenish tinge is in the 1970 Spanish film Los monstruos del terror. Watch the trailer and judge for yourself:

However, it’s more likely that his colour comes from the TV Show, The Munsters. While that was broadcast in black and white, many publicity photos were taken in colour, and Herman Munster has that expected green hue. It might not have even been intentional, different colours of make-up would have been used to achieve different shades of gray on screen and perhaps green just gave that corpse-like pallor they were after.

Still, much of the credit for our freakish favourites must stay with Jack. His star was to eventually fade at Universal, as modern latex masks which were cheaper and quicker to use gradually took the place of more traditional techniques, but this Halloween, while you’re getting dressed up, remember Jack Pierce, the man who gave us the Mummy’s bandages, the Wolf-Man’s facial hair and Frankenstein’s Monster’s bolt.

Stanley Kubrick designs what he felt was the ultimate storage box. You can still order them from his supplier.

When Stanley Kubrick died, he left behind literally thousands of boxes full of archive material, so much that he became frustrated with the storage boxes available to him. He worked out what he felt was the optimum size for a box in terms of storage space and ease of handling. and consulted with a custom box building company to deliver boxes to his design. He specified that the lids should be “not too tight, not too loose but JUST PERFECT“. According to an internal memo from the box company they noted “fussy customer, make sure the lids slide off properly” during their manufacture.

Apparently, you can still order boxes to Kubrick’s specification from his supplier:

The box in question was produced to the following specification:

Ref: R.278

Type: Brass wire stitched box, full depth lift-off lid (case lid) with triangular lugs.

Composition: 1900 micron (0.080 inch) double sided kraft container board.

Dimensions (internal): 16.1/4 x 11 x 3.3/4 inches (R.278).

Our ex-works prices for a box of this type would be:
10 boxes at £3.40 each
25 boxes at £2.20 each
50 boxes at £1.95 each
Prices are in pounds sterling and exclusive of VAT.

Trading since 1914, we have built an unrivalled reputation as manufacturers of bespoke hand made boxes of the very highest quality, a reputation further enhanced when we were awarded The Royal Warrant.

I very much appreciate your interest in our company and hope that we might be of further assistance.

Regards
Sales & Marketing Manager
G Ryder & Co Ltd
Tel: 01908 375524
Fax: 01908 373658

I’m tempted to put an order in myself although I suspect the prices might have gone up a bit.

Sadly I’ve just read that Oliver Postgate, creator of such children’s classics as the Clangers, Bagpuss and Ivor the Engine is no more.

The Clangers of course were famous for disproving all that nonsense about NASA actually landing on the moon and speaking from a written script with Swanee whistles.

The original dialogue was virtually indecipherable, which didn’t stop Postgate getting into trouble when a BBC executive correctly divined that for one clanger he’d written the line: “Oh sod it, the bloody thing won’t open”.

[Edit: In case you were wondering, it's in this episode.. ]

Bagpuss gave us Professor Yaffle, the Marvellous Magical Mouse-Organ and that saggy old cloth cat who everybody loved. Surprisingly there were only ever 13 episodes, it certainly seems like more to my childhood memory. Ivor the Engine taught us that dragons live in Wales, and deemed that forevermore steam engines will go psss-chi-cuff, psss-chi-cuff.

R.I.P. Oliver, thanks for making the world a little more surreal and a lot more friendly.

Now, who do we need to ballot at the BBC to make them repeat them all?

I’ve just got back from seeing Eddie Izzard’s new show in London, “Stripped”. It had some great moments and lots of squirrels and tigers, but unfortunately we ended up leaving with a bit of a sour taste in our mouths. In the middle of the second half he moved onto the subject of religion and belief which, following a fairly mild heckle from the audience when someone indicated that God had given us Eddie Izzard, turned into a a bit of a shouted anti-religious rant. Now, I’m the last person to defend any sort of special status for religion, I’m an atheist and have been pretty much forever, but I don’t go to a comedy show to be lectured to about how ridiculous the entire concept is, particularly not in a fairly aggressive manner.

It seemed particularly odd being addressed to an audience in London who, I would imagine, were largely old-school Eddie Izzard fans and are pretty unlikely to have the sort of closed religious fundamentalist opinions he seemed to be attacking.

To me, attacking organised religious belief is like shooting fish in a barrel. It’s easy to dismiss as founded on ancient myths and legends in the 21st Century if you take a logical viewpoint. The days where this was a controversial issue were surely buried in the middle ages. I did wonder whether spending time in the USA, as presumably he does these days, it’s closer to the surface and perhaps I’m misguided in my judgement that the intelligent majority these days are largely non-religious. Certainly skeptics I’ve met over there are very fond of preaching to the choir to demonstrate their own non-religious superiority.

I will accept that the rise of fundamentalist Islamic belief is a cause for concern, but I still think that it is the beliefs of a relatively small number of people which are being inflated as being much more important than they actually are by religious leaders anxious for power and control.

If you’re a comedian and you want to make jokes about religion, go ahead, it’s a subject ripe for parody, but don’t insult the intelligence of your audience by preaching at them, that’s just lowering yourself to the level of the evangelists. Be funny – that’s what people have paid for.
