When I was younger I always thought that they were some sort of electrode, because of the lightening scenes. Now that I'm watching it again, right now, I think it's because of the main part of the body they are using, was from a hung man with a broken neck. Could it be that it's to try to make the neck strudier? AS proof, have you noticed that a part of his acting is that he almost never turns his head? I was just thinking about this.
