I'm afraid I don't have a lot of faith in the current UK government's approach with regard to protecting our basic rights and freedoms. Increasing the size of the database doesn't seem to be making much difference to the number of crimes solved in any case (apart from presumably making it a lot harder to search). According to a <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/11/dna_convictions_fall/" rel="nofollow">Register article</a> it only helped to solve 0.36 of recorded cases this year, down from 0.37 last year and half a million extra records were added during the same period.
